Mary Jo, a young enslaved girl working on a farm, dreams of freedom. During an escape to the fields, she envisions a scarecrow coming to her rescue from her abusive owners. When her master learns about her relationship with a new suitor, he plots to masquerade as the straw figure to deceive her.
