A puzzling death at the Paris Opera brings Duncan MacLeod face-to-face with one of the most unusual Immortals he has encountered throughout his long life. Ursa, a massive figure resembling more of a beast than a man, was saved by Duncan from persecution centuries ago and taken to a safe haven in an abbey. That abbey has long since vanished, and now Ursa resides beneath the streets of Paris. He has developed an infatuation with a fading opera singer who seeks to manipulate Ursa's pure heart to eliminate her competition.
