A battered soldier grapples with a harsh reality as he develops an unexpected bond in the recovery room with the enemy combatant he has gravely injured. The soldier reflects, "All he wanted were my old boots. His feet were so cold. I would have done the same if our situations had been reversed. He was just another person like me, and I took his life for a pair of boots. How will I ever see shoes again without being reminded of him?"
