The announcement of Christine's resignation deeply affects the entire staff. In her farewell note to Mrs. Cabot, Christine expresses her frustration with Peter, who has been using their work dynamic to suppress his true feelings for her. Both Julie and Megan are upset when Peter promotes Julie to fill Christine’s role, leaving Christine feeling betrayed for not being consulted, while Megan struggles with feelings of jealousy over being passed over. After an emotional farewell speech at Christine's party, Peter retreats to a hotel bar, where Billy urges him to confess his love. Summoning his courage, Peter rushes to Christine's apartment, but falters when the moment arrives. As Christine heads to the airport, Peter blocks her cab, finally declaring his love. They embrace, but their joy is fleeting when they receive unexpected news.
