Syd encounters Abby Franklin, who has a concerning mass on her neck and fears it may be cancer. Meanwhile, Joanie, expecting her second child, feels alienated and believes her father resents her. Syd discovers that Abby is aware of the mass but remains hopeful it will resolve itself. At the church, Syd finds Abby leading a choir in preparation for an upcoming Christmas concert. Abby's granddaughter learns about the potential cancer diagnosis, pending a biopsy. Joanie wrestles with frustration over Burt's absence during a visit to see baby photos. Syd envisions herself as Joanie's attorney in a case dubbed "Lynda's Law." Joanie starts to internalize her father's critiques about her lack of consideration for others, while Burt has a surprise planned for her.
