In the vast African desert, Andrew captures haunting images of Sudanese slaves enduring the relentless heat. Meanwhile, in the U.S., young Thomas Cooper feels distressed as his mother, Senator Katherine Cooper, prepares to head back to Washington D.C. Monica is struck with horror upon seeing Andrew's photographs and questions why the angels aren't intervening in Sudan. Tess reveals that Thomas is the key who will guide them there. In D.C., Dr. Joseph Akot joins Andrew and Monica in discussing the slavery issue with Kate, but she initially dismisses it, siding with the Sudanese government. They manage to convince her to keep the photos and read Dr. Joe's letter, which reveals that slaves can be bought for just fifty dollars. One image particularly resonates with Thomas—a small Sudanese boy he names Sam, after his deceased brother. Thomas begs his mother to save Sam, but she explains the complexities of the situation.
