True Colours (2022)
S01E39 Buddhists of Wat Svay
Episode Overview
In Siem Reap, Cambodia, every dawn brings a unique cultural connection to nature. The soothing chants of monks resonate from the Theravada Buddhist monastery, or "wat," as they begin their day, centering their minds amidst numerous distractions. Unlike secluded western retreats, the Wat Svay compound sits at the heart of the community, bustling with activity. Yet, the serene presence of nature remains close by. A lively pigeon roost perches atop the pagoda, surrounded by intricate carvings of protective serpent figures known as "nagas." Schoolchildren stroll among the votive "stupas," tending to the grounds, while a brilliant rainbow arches gracefully above the temple, a reminder that dawn rainbows are always steeper than those seen at midday.
