Episode Overview

As dawn breaks over a lavender sky on New Zealand's South Island, we find ourselves by the tranquil glacial Lake Wakatipu, nestled within the Southern Alps. Towering mountains surround us, their rugged formations telling tales of tectonic plate collisions, where schist "tors" stand alongside striking metamorphic rock spires. This picturesque landscape served as a backdrop for "The Lord of the Rings." At water's edge, delicate hoarfrost blankets the grasses and plants each night. As the sun rises, the ice crystals sparkle like magic, transforming the indigo sky into a warm yellow glow. The braided river system begins to warm, and paradise shelducks forage for clover and seeds, while the elusive dunnock pecks at the pebbles. The hoarfrost gives way to the sun, marking the start of a winter day in this enchanting "Middle Earth."
