Gerald Hadleigh, the secretary of a local writers' circle, is discovered brutally murdered the day after the group hosted renowned author and former psychotherapist Max Jennings. Gerald had expressed reluctance about inviting Max to Midsomer Worthy, appearing uneasy prior to the visit. As Barnaby delves deeper into the case, he uncovers that Gerald was an enigmatic figure—lacking a National Insurance number, family ties, and a marriage certificate despite having wedding photographs. On the night he was killed, a mysterious woman visited him. Subsequently, Max Jennings goes missing, only to be found dead as well.
