In the quaint town of Morton Fendle, a craft center located in an old mill is struggling financially, leaving several local investors feeling victimized by the owner, Alan Hollingsworth. When his stunning wife, Simone, suddenly disappears, Barnaby suspects foul play and starts monitoring Hollingsworth. However, Hollingsworth manages to slip away with a large sum of cash, and a neighbor tracking him meets an untimely end in a strange accident. Soon after, Hollingsworth is discovered dead, while Simone reappears unharmed. Barnaby deduces that she and an accomplice staged the entire kidnapping, yet he lacks the evidence to prove it.
