While participating in a watercolour painting class, Barnaby's wife, Joyce, stumbles upon a corpse on the village green of Midsomer Florey, identifying it as the elderly Miss Fairfax. Barnaby is assigned to the case but soon finds himself sidelined as the National Intelligence Squad takes over, leaving him to handle a missing handbag. Undeterred, Barnaby continues his investigation, uncovering layers of betrayal. He learns that the victim was actually a young undercover detective, and her colleagues are framing the village handyman for a murder that never happened. As the plot thickens, Barnaby races against time to thwart a heist involving five million pounds tied to an old heist, ultimately locking two agents in a bank strong-room during a tense showdown.
