In Midsomer Parva, the revival of a traditional festival takes a horrific turn when the curate is burned alive inside a straw effigy of a woman. Alan Clifford, a local landowner, hosts a party at the Manor House, hinting at hidden secrets. Shortly after a pig's head is discovered at the parish church altar, the curate’s lover, Reverend Jim Hale, mysteriously dies from what appears to be 'spontaneous combustion.' Barnaby dismisses witchcraft rumors, uncovering that Hale’s clothing was treated with phosphorus. As he closes in on the murderer, Liz Francis is knocked unconscious with a candlestick, becoming another victim.
