Episode Overview

Tess is unusually irritable as she assigns Monica the task of being interviewed by Callie Martin, a jaded journalist investigating angelic encounters. Monica shares her own experience as she recounts a recent case. Dr. Joe Patcherek, a heart transplant surgeon, must operate on Ethan Parker, the drunk driver responsible for the tragic deaths of Joe's five children. This tragedy has caused a rift between Joe and his artist wife, Lisa, who is consumed by a sculpture dedicated to their children in the hospital's children's wing. During a tense conversation, Lisa presses Joe to find forgiveness—for her, for Ethan, and for God. Later, as Joe performs the surgery, Monica, the transplant coordinator, halts time and appears to him, reminding him that he holds a life in his hands and only God has the authority to decide who lives or dies.
