Episode Overview

While on the job at the post office, Monica crosses paths with Max, who sorts through letters considered "dead" that are addressed to Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and even God. Max, a Holocaust survivor, responds to children's letters to God by telling them there's no God and to avoid believing in fantasies. Despite Max only replying to her initial letter, a young girl named Tanya Brenner continues to write to God. After Andrew introduces Monica to Tanya, they convince Tess to ask God if they can read Tanya's letters. With permission granted, they discover that Tanya’s father is gravely ill and that her mother's girlfriend, Sandy, is abusive. Monica is furious and wants to intervene, but Tess reminds her that Max is her focus. Determined, Monica sets up a scenario for Max to witness Sandy's aggression towards Tanya.
