Chandler Crowne, a grumpy 102-year-old film director, believes his time is up, but Andrew insists he still has important matters to address. Enter Stevie Noonan, a young filmmaker working on a documentary about the legendary director known for his somber themes. Stevie's challenge is to convince the reclusive artist to discuss the darker films that defined his career. Flashbacks reveal a younger Chandler directing his star, Ruby, in an ambitious project titled "Redemption." During this period, he faces the drama of a difficult leading lady and the studio head Sid Lumsky, who dismisses an actress for her off-set romance. Ultimately, Chandler selects Monica from a group of unknowns. As their conversation ends abruptly, Stevie is left with lingering questions. Before leaving, she swipes Chandler's pocket watch, later returning with the pawn ticket as leverage for their next meeting.
