At an awards dinner hosted by the Crime Writers of America at the home of Edgar Manning, the proud recipient of the Blunt Instrument Award, Ellery is absent due to a bad head cold. During the event, the arrogant Manning decides to call Ellery to brag about his achievement. However, as they converse, Manning is suddenly murdered. Now, Ellery must make some significant mental leaps to unravel the mystery behind the shocking crime.
