Once the site of two self-sustaining living experiments, it now functions under Columbia University's earth sciences program, focusing on research about greenhouse gases and their role in global warming. At the house, the final touches of the re-stuccoing process are underway, alongside the application of a reflective, waterproof roof coating. We explore a termite control system that utilizes insect growth hormones instead of harmful chemicals, then visit the stunning new kitchen of the Meigs', featuring mesquite cabinets, sleek black concrete countertops, and top-of-the-line stainless-steel appliances. We also spot cabinetmaker Tom Klijian working on his creative library shelves that double as a powder room door. On the last day, Richard Trethewey arrives to inspect the luxurious master bath, complete with a walk-in closet boasting custom shelving, a whirlpool tub, and a separate toilet/bidet area finished in mahogany.
