The Tunnel (2013)
S18E03 The Nantucket House - 3
Episode Overview
The episode opens with a glimpse of Nantucket's Unitarian Universalist church, an elegant example of subtle New England design and trompe l'oeil artistry from 1809. At 3 Milk Street, we meet general contractor Bruce Killen, who has secured his building permit and is deep into a gut renovation. This extensive overhaul is necessary due to the need for better insulation, modernized wiring and plumbing, new windows and trim, and a complete reconfiguration of the layout, along with the removal of hazardous lead paint. Outside, mason Don Kissell is readying concrete for the new addition’s foundation. Our master carpenter visits a local plant to observe the concrete mixing process. Designer Jock Gifford updates us on the Historic District Commission's decision: while the additions received approval, any exterior features must be shown to have existed originally. To assist with this, Syd Conway, who grew up in the house, stops by to share insights.
