The Tunnel (2013)
S18E06 The Nantucket House - 6
Episode Overview
The episode begins with a clamming adventure, hunting for quahogs at a hidden spot. Here, we encounter designer Jock Gifford, who uses a house model to illustrate the ongoing renovations, including a new gable addition that requires a hole to be cut in the roof. Inside, framing contractor Paul O'Rourke and his team expertly make the cut, construct the gable wall on the second floor, and hoist it into position. On the rooftop, Bruce Killen assesses the progress of the new wood shingle roof and details the materials chosen for durability in the island's tough climate: heavy sheathing, tarpaper, a bitumen membrane for edges and valleys, copper elements, a three-dimensional mesh for airflow, and #1, vertical-grained, thick-butted (5/8”) Western red cedar shingles. Meanwhile, homeowner Craig Bentley contemplates installing a ground-source heat pump for efficient heating and cooling, a smart option for island living.
