Miles from Nowhere (2024)
S01E10 Talking to Strangers
Episode Overview
In this episode, the focus is on the art of communication in the animal kingdom. Attenborough journeys through Kenya, where a local tribesman calls a honeyguide bird, which leads them to a bees' nest. After harvesting the honey, the tribesman leaves some as a reward for the bird. Observing African hunting dogs, we see how they target the gazelle that leaps the least. Larks cleverly sing while being chased, signaling their fitness to the predator. Vervet monkeys possess a complex language, with specific calls for different predators. Attenborough also marvels at fireflies illuminating the night and discovers that over 200 fish species communicate through sound underwater. Sea lions can sense these sounds, while squids express themselves through color changes and body language. Finally, Attenborough swims alongside dolphins, who use ultrasonic clicks and inherited family calls, showcasing their remarkable communication skills, making them one of humanity's closest counterparts in this regard.
