Nestled in the mountains of Shikoku, the remote area of Iya features a handful of small villages surrounded by steep, narrow valleys shrouded in mist, steeped in history. During the 12th century, this rugged landscape served as a refuge for fleeing Heike clan warriors who could easily evade capture among its challenging terrain. Over time, the local population has dwindled and aged. However, a decade ago, Iya emerged as a sought-after spot for international travelers.
