Journeys in Japan (2010)
S03E10 Dancing Among the Gods: Takachiho, Miyazaki Prefecture
Episode Overview
Nestled in the mountains of central Kyushu, Takachiho holds a significant place in Japanese mythology, believed to be where the gods first descended to Earth. The area features numerous sites connected to these ancient legends, including Amano-Yasukawara, a cave where deities supposedly convened to strategize after the sun goddess went into hiding, casting the world into darkness. A key highlight of the visit is the enchanting traditional dance known as "Kagura," a practice that has been cherished for nearly a thousand years. Performed throughout the night, these dances recount tales from mythology to express gratitude for bountiful harvests. In this episode of Journeys in Japan, Peter MacMillan explores how the people of Japan have coexisted with these divine beings since ancient times.
