Journeys in Japan (2010)
S09E17 Tsugaru: Amateur Sumo, Indomitable Tradition
Episode Overview
The Tsugaru region in Aomori Prefecture has a long-standing reputation as a premier hub for cultivating sumo wrestlers. Since the establishment of Japan's first national sumo arena in Ryogoku, Tokyo, back in 1909, 69 wrestlers from this area have ascended to the top division, more than any other region in the country. This success can be attributed to several factors, including the heavy snowfall in winter that encourages indoor sports like sumo, as well as the local residents' renowned patience and perseverance—qualities essential in the sport. In this episode of Journeys in Japan, American translator B.T. explores Tsugaru, witnessing young sumo wrestlers compete. He visits a museum dedicated to the local enthusiasm for sumo, enjoys breathtaking views from Mt. Iwaki, and checks out a museum featuring massive neputa festival floats.
