When a stockbroker is kidnapped by thugs, his sister seeks out Rockford, offering him a mere $23.64 for his help, as her brother had warned her against involving the police. Despite the paltry payment, Jim feels a sense of responsibility for the young, naive 25-year-old bookkeeper. He worries that her brother might be dead and knows she struggles to accept the possibility that her only family member, who has always looked out for her, could be entangled in a shady securities scheme.
