Episode Overview
One morning, the Virginian arrives in a small town and notices a gallows under construction. He speaks with Clara Plain, the saloon owner (Cloris Leachman), who informs him that Stacey Grainger is in jail, facing execution the following day. The Sheriff (Ford Rainey) explains that during a card game, Stacey had an argument with the well-respected local doctor, John Marsh, who was holding a significant sum for the orphanage. After losing, Stacey left town, encountered the Sheriff, and allegedly killed him for the money, only to be caught by two townsfolk. Stacey insists he found the doctor already dead and fired a warning shot at someone fleeing. Although he had no money, the Sheriff asserts Stacey discarded it upon hearing approaching footsteps. In the adjacent cell, Randall (Morgan Woodward) awaits transfer to prison, and the Virginian discovers that Stacey's trial was rushed.
