Irma Hodge's affluent stepfather, Sumner Hodge, has decided to deny her inheritance due to his disdain for her boyfriend, folksinger Con Bolton. After an apparent assassination attempt on Sumner, he insinuates to the police that Con is responsible. Shortly after, another attempt on Sumner's life occurs when his car plummets off a cliff, resulting in his death. Investigators uncover that the brake line was cut. Witnesses report seeing Con tampering with the brakes just moments before the accident, leading to murder charges against him.
