Ethel Andrews’ life takes a turn for the worse when her fiancé, Bruce Strickland, leaves her at the altar and implicates her in a $50,000 securities theft, thanks to her signature on the transfer form. Determined to escape her troubles, Ethel almost collides with a car driven by Peggy Sutton, who is fleeing from a hired assassin. In a moment of poor judgment, Ethel agrees to swap identities with Peggy, only for Peggy to tragically die in a car crash. Discovering $50,000 in Peggy’s trunk, Ethel makes the ill-fated choice to tell Bruce, who is later found murdered. With Perry sending Paul Drake to investigate Peggy Sutton in Lake Tahoe, Ethel realizes the noose is tightening around her.
