Kimble serves as the caretaker at a large ranch in Connecticut, owned by newspaper heiress Ann Guthrie, who lives with her husband Harlan and her sister Ruth. Ann, who inherited her father's estate and the Westborne Clarion newspaper, believes Ruth deserves a share of the wealth. Unbeknownst to Ann, Ruth and Harlan are engaged in a secret affair and conspire to eliminate her for the inheritance. When Kimble uncovers their sinister plan and warns Ann, she dismisses his concerns. In response, Ruth and Harlan devise a scheme to frame Kimble for Ann's murder.
