Ancient Worlds (2010)
S01E06 City Of Man, City Of God
Episode Overview
In the series finale, archaeologist and historian Richard Miles delves into the ascent and decline of the Roman Empire. At its peak, the Empire served around 60 million citizens and subjects, stretching from Hadrian's Wall to the Euphrates River. Even under erratic and dangerous emperors, the imperial framework remained strong, supported by elite families across the vast territory whose loyalty was maintained through cultural aspiration, economic prospects, and military power. However, the comforts of Roman rule led its people to ponder deeper existential questions that their pragmatic, polytheistic beliefs struggled to answer. Christianity emerged to address this spiritual void, ultimately winning over Emperor Constantine and marking the triumph of the City of God over the City of Man.
