In the 1980s, New York City experienced a resurgence fueled by the sexual revolution of the previous decade and the emergence of the Gay Liberation Front, attracting a wave of queer individuals to downtown Manhattan and giving birth to the vibrant underground ball scene. However, this period of cultural flourishing was overshadowed by the AIDS crisis, which ravaged the gay community while Ronald Reagan and his Moral Majority turned a blind eye to the urgent need for intervention.
