Episode Overview

When the Chief announces his retirement, speculation begins about who will take over. Mark is set on leaving Seattle for good, but Meredith inadvertently keeps him around by mentioning the Chief position is open. This frustrates Derek, who initially blames Meredith for Mark's decision to stay, but soon realizes his anger runs deeper. Meanwhile, the attending doctors at Seattle Grace are desperate for Richard's attention, but he expresses his disappointment in them. He also dismisses Bailey's plan for a free clinic, but she moves forward with it after Izzie offers her entire $8.7 million inheritance. Struggling with grief after his father's death, George turns to sex to cope and ultimately proposes to Callie. Cristina and Burke remain silent with each other until he unexpectedly proposes. Richard tries to reconcile with his wife, Adele, only to come home and find her with another man.
