The competition for the Chief of Surgery title intensifies with the arrival of a new contender. The surgeons discover that Colin Marlow, the newcomer, was Cristina's professor and her former lover. In an effort to keep their past under wraps, he starts deceiving Burke, but soon acknowledges that their relationship is deteriorating. Meanwhile, George learns that Callie's family is wealthy, a detail she kept hidden to see if he truly loves her for who she is. Derek pushes his former colleague from New York to undergo risky brain cancer surgery to ensure her future. Alex continues to care for Jane Doe, who remains without memories. He moves in with Meredith, and they share a dinner with her father and stepmother, where she bonds with Susan but finds her relationship with Thatcher strained. Izzie wakes up, shocked to realize she and George slept together while intoxicated.
