After eight years of training, the residents travel to San Francisco for their oral board exams. At the hotel, Catherine and Richard have an unexpected encounter that ignites some tension between them. Meanwhile, Bailey steps in when Owen and Teddy clash over the care of a young patient involved in a car accident. Mark also seeks Lexie's help on one of his cases. On another front, Alex struggles with guilt for being absent from the hospital as Tommy's condition starts to deteriorate.
