Encouraged by Lily, Herman decides to ask his boss, Mr. Gateman, for a raise, but instead gets fired on the spot. Fearing Lily's disappointment, he pretends to go to work while secretly looking for a new job. Unfortunately, he faces a string of failures at various blue-collar positions, culminating in a disastrous experience at a Chinese laundry where he creates utter mayhem.
