During one of Grandpa's wild experiments, Herman suffers a lightning strike that leaves him severely disfigured, transforming him to look like officer Francis Muldoon from CAR 54, WHERE ARE YOU? (essentially how Fred Gwynne appears without his makeup). Determined to help her husband regain his former appearance, Lily seeks out plastic surgery to mend his altered face.
