Episode Overview

On May 8, 1931, a special U.S. mail train traveling from Rock Island is halted by emergency flares in Hillsdale, Illinois. Armed gangsters, donning Army gas masks, launch tear gas grenades into the train, fatally wounding a postal clerk before escaping with a staggering million dollars in negotiable securities. Three months later, the notorious Tommy Karpeles, once a prominent figure in the Chicago underworld, is apprehended for his involvement in the heist, while his two accomplices remain at large.
