In 1977, the Los Angeles Times covers the nine-day kidnapping of Frances Winn by Synanon. Attorney Paul Morantz successfully secures a settlement for her. As media attention intensifies, Chuck makes a staggering $62,000 purchase of firearms and ammunition, marking the largest single firearms buy in California at that time. Shortly after, he allegedly plots to take out Morantz and ends up receiving a five-year probation sentence. Struggling with alcoholism and a mental health diagnosis, Chuck loses everything and passes away in a nursing home, leaving a complicated legacy as a brilliant yet unrestrained talent. Meanwhile, many former followers are left to rebuild their lives after Synanon's collapse.
