Nick is shocked to learn that the shooter responsible for injuring a young protester during the duck season opener is Dr. Zoe Hamilton, who has occasionally shown interest in him. Zoe insists it was an accident, explaining that the chief protester grabbed her gun just as she was about to shoot a duck. Meanwhile, Adam finds a new admirer when he helps Stacey Norse, the attractive eighteen-year-old daughter of a duck shooter, after she gets hurt in the chaos. Stacey's father, Ken, accuses chief protester Matthew Prentice of stealing one of his ducks. The situation worsens when Ken suddenly falls ill while enjoying a duck meal at the Imperial Hotel. Suspecting poisoning, the Heelers investigate Matthew Prentice, but blood tests reveal Ken is suffering from severe lead poisoning, a condition that would have taken over a decade to develop, leading them to reconsider their suspects, including Ken's own children, Stacey and her sixteen-year-old sibling.
