Charles accepts a job from Widow Thurman to refinish her woodwork, hoping to earn a beautiful set of china for Caroline. The young widow is charming, and to maintain his secret, Charles finds himself weaving different tales to the girls and Caroline. As a result, suspicion grows among them, leading everyone to believe that Charles is involved in an affair.
