Caroline stays by Mary’s side as she unexpectedly requires another surgery. To cover the costs, Charles decides to take a dangerous job, enlisting Mr. Edwards to join him. They work as Powder Monkeys, digging a tunnel for the railroad. However, Charles prioritizes speed over safety, ignoring the risks around him, even during the funeral of a Chinese laborer. His reckless approach ultimately leads to disaster when a cave-in occurs, trapping both him and Harris beneath the rubble.
