Mrs. Oleson is taken aback when she encounters Hester-Sue Terhune and realizes she is African American. Hester-Sue has brought black children to integrate into the blind school, and they all set off together toward Walnut Grove. Ultimately, it’s a wise little blind black boy who shows Harriet that her prejudice is misplaced, leading her to a pivotal moment in her life. Meanwhile, Adam must confront his greatest fear as he faces a significant turning point of his own.
