Burt Payne holds a 10% share in a professional football team, while his wealthy wife, Ellen, owns the rest. Facing financial difficulties and realizing his career is over, Burt attempts to sell his stake to a group of investors and secures a down payment. Ellen, however, is against the sale. After she has a meeting with one of the prospective buyers on a train, Burt mysteriously dies in an explosion, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding his sudden demise.
