Martha Costello has ascended to the role of QC, but she quickly discovers that the position can be quite isolating. At Shoe Lane Chambers, times are challenging, and senior clerk Billy is struggling to maintain stability as Clive Reader tries to cope with the disappointment of his failed silk application. Martha is representing Brendan Kay, a member of one of London's most notorious crime syndicates, who faces charges of blinding a man for allegedly disrespecting their second-in-command. Complicating matters is Brendan's solicitor, Micky Joy, an old-school tactician who straddles both sides of the law. With the formidable Caroline Warwick, known as Lady Macbeth for her ruthless courtroom tactics, opposing her, Martha realizes that to secure a victory, she must mount a bold and uncompromising defense. Meanwhile, Clive is handling a delicate case with a new solicitor, George Duggan.
