After navigating the challenges of Sudan, Michael Palin now encounters the perilous task of crossing Ethiopia, where the remnants of Mengistu's defeated military linger. Accompanied by a military escort, he rushes to Addis Ababa. Continuing his trek towards the Kenyan border, he makes his way to Lerata. As he passes by Mount Kenya, he realizes the importance of this landmark—he has officially completed half of his expedition.
