S11E06 An Iron-Age Trading Centre - Green Island, Dorset
Episode Overview
Green Island in Poole Harbour has proven to be a notable site for Iron Age activities, showcasing signs of industrial work and trade with the mainland. However, it has yet to undergo thorough excavation. Two large jetties, now covered, suggest it served either as a port or a defensive structure. As a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), only hand-digging is permitted, requiring the topsoil to be replaced afterward. The discoveries quickly begin to accumulate, particularly notable are the signs of shale processing for jewelry and ironworking. Project Director Eileen Wilkes collaborates with archaeologist Miles Russell, Iron Age expert John Collis, and metallurgist Roger Doonan. Experimental archaeologist Jake Keenan showcases shale working using ancient tools, while geomorphologist Vincent May reveals that in prehistoric times, the water level was two meters lower, making Green Island much larger.
