Two decades ago, a severe drought exposed what appeared to be a massive Roman fort just a few hundred meters from the opulent Drumlanrig Castle, home to the Duke of Buccleuch, in Dumfries. This intriguing find remained unexplored until Time Team decided to delve into it. The team aimed to uncover several mysteries. Was it genuinely a Roman fort? If confirmed, it would be one of the most northernly located ones, adding significant value to Scotland's heritage. They sought to determine when the Romans occupied the site, as no previous discoveries had provided clues about its dating. Additionally, Time Team aimed to trace the roads that connected to the fort, investigate potential nearby civilian settlements, and decipher how the Romans crafted their renowned draco, the military standard known for instilling fear in their foes.
