Episode Overview

For the past 15 years, a local metal detector enthusiast has been exploring a field in Godstone, Surrey, uncovering an impressive array of Roman artifacts. His discoveries include around 600 coins, several of which are quite valuable, alongside brooches and other intriguing items, such as what appears to be a metal sceptre handle. Archaeologists speculate that the sheer quantity and significance of these finds suggest they may have been intentional offerings, hinting at the presence of a Roman temple or religious site. The sceptre handle resembles those found at another nearby Roman religious location, possibly used by priests. Situated near a Roman road linking London to the south coast, this site has yet to be excavated, although a geophysical survey was previously commissioned by English Heritage. Local archaeologists have long been curious about what lies beneath and have enlisted Time Team to assist in the investigation.
