Time Team (1994)
S14E06 A Port and Stilton - Stilton, Cambridgeshire
Episode Overview
The team explores a location near the ancient Roman road, Ermine Street, where a collection of Roman artifacts has been found. However, field-walking has also revealed Anglo-Saxon items, indicating that the site has a richer history than initially thought. The area, unlike today, would have been quite boggy and marshy. The archaeological evidence increasingly suggests that this was a Roman industrial hub, particularly for pottery production and trade. After the Romans departed, the site may have transitioned into an important monastic center, which excites Mick. The team also tries their hand at replicating a Roman kiln. By the end of their third day, John's geophysics reveals a potential Neolithic enclosure. They even squeeze in some cheese tasting, although Stilton is not where Stilton cheese originates. They are accompanied by Philippa Walton from the PAS and Ben Robinson from Peterborough Museum.
