Time Team (1994)
S07E10 In Search of the Palace of King Offa - Sutton, Hereford
Episode Overview
The Time Team visits Freen's Court, straddling the English-Welsh border, where a recent aerial image reveals intriguing parch marks. This area was once part of the kingdom of Mercia, governed by the formidable King Offa in the eighth century. Could these marks indicate his palace? While the site is steeped in vibrant legends, the team struggles to pinpoint the parch marks on the ground. Due to its status as a protected monument, they must excavate by hand under the supervision of English Heritage inspector Paul Stamper. Although they uncover some medieval remains, no Anglo-Saxon artifacts have surfaced yet. Joining them are historian John Blair, County Archaeologist Keith Ray, and pottery expert Alan Vince. Meanwhile, Phil lends a hand to experts Richard Darrer and Guy Apter in crafting a replica wooden cement mixer.
