Episode Overview
The owners of Rycote House reside in a beautifully converted stable block but are curious about the grand house that once existed on their property, believed to have burned down in 1745 while hosting Tudor royalty. They invite Time Team to conduct an investigation. Although no signs of a fire are discovered in the trenches, evidence shows that impressive houses were constructed and remodeled on the site from the 14th century until the Georgian period. Among the findings is a drainage tunnel linked to Capability Brown's landscaping efforts. Historian Robin Bush returns from the Bodleian Library with a remarkable 1807 catalogue detailing the house's sale room by room. Nearby, a townhouse features a fireplace and doorways that may have originated from that sale. Food Historian Ivan Day prepares and serves sweetmeats and hippocras, while palace expert Simon Thurley joins the team.
